The Hadid sisters hit the town last night in New York City in honor of Bella’s 26th birthday. While the birthday girl sported a discreet all-black look for the occasion, Gigi opted for more of a statement look. She chose a surprising fall skirt that nods back to the early 2000s. (Hint: It’s something your middle school art school teacher may have worn at the time.)
The throwback piece in question was a vintage floor-length denim and silk maxi skirt by Roberto Cavalli. The slightly bohemian piece had a major moment in the early-aughts, thanks in part to Britney Spears at the 2000 MTV VMAs. To give it a fresh new feel, Hadid’s skirt was partially bleached, and it had a swishy silk hemline which instantly made it feel more modern (not to mention more lightweight than a fully-covered denim style). How she styled it helped, too: She paired it with a cropped turtleneck and a polished leather blazer.
So, is the denim maxi bound to have a moment in 2022? Considering Bella also wore one last year, it’s safe to say the trend is slowly gaining legs. The recent spring 2023 runways featured tons of long jean skirts, as seen at Diesel, Altuzarra, and Luar. If you’re intrigued by the look, just remember to do like Gigi, and to offset the denim maxi with sexier, sleeker pieces up top. We’re going for artistic here—not full-on art teacher.
